Album Description:
"Some Girls" is the 14th official full length album, released by the British rock band: "The Rolling Stones". The album cover for "Some Girls" was conceived and designed by Peter Corriston, who would design the next three album covers, with illustrations by Hubert Kretzschmar. An elaborate die-cut design, with the colours on the sleeves varying in different markets, it featured the Rolling Stones' faces alongside those of select female celebrities inserted into a copy of an old Valmor Products Corporation perfume ad. The cover sparked controversy upon its release, as it depicted the faces of various women, including prominent figures such as Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, and Farrah Fawcett, with the Rolling Stones' logo and the title "Some Girls" plastered across their mouths.
The album was released on 9 June 1978, and was a commercial success, reaching the top of the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It showcased a shift in the Rolling Stones' musical style, as they embraced elements of punk, disco, and new wave, while still retaining their signature rock 'n' roll sound. The band experimented with different musical genres and incorporated a more streamlined and polished production.
"Some Girls" features several hit singles that have become staples of the Rolling Stones' live performances. The opening track, "Miss You", combines elements of disco and rock, with a catchy rhythm and infectious chorus that resonated with audiences. It became one of their most successful singles, reaching the top of the charts in the US and Canada. Another notable track is "Beast of Burden", a soulful ballad that showcases Mick Jagger's emotive vocals and the band's ability to create powerful and introspective songs.
The album also addresses themes of love, relationships, and the ups and downs of fame. Songs like "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" and "Shattered" explore the complexities of romantic relationships, while "Respectable" and "When the Whip Comes Down" delve into the dark underbelly of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The Rolling Stones' lyrics and music capture the essence of their experiences as a band navigating the turbulent waters of fame and fortune.
Beyond the music, "Some Girls" is a testament to the Rolling Stones' ability to evolve and adapt to the changing musical landscape. In an era dominated by punk and disco, they managed to infuse their unique style into the songs, creating a cohesive and captivating album. The band's longevity and their ability to stay relevant over the years can be attributed, in part, to their willingness to explore new sounds and incorporate them into their music.
